If the bullying scenes make for uneasy viewing, there's also subtlety in the way Iwai intensifies their claustrophobia with the film's beautifully lit rural setting. We learn through flashbacks, including a nightmarish holiday video, how Yuichi's high school existence has bleakened, and that his former best friend Hoshino (Oshinari) has transformed into a sadistic ringleader and classroom pimp. Director Shunji Iwai evokes the gaps and hesitancy in early internet communication through the depiction of character encoding across the screen. Meanwhile, the only candid communication here takes place online between self-professed 'Lilyholics', where Yuichi connects anonymously with another obsessive. Twenty years after the release of All About Lily Chou-Chou, I can’t think of a film that better depicts what first drew people to the internet, and certainly none that matches its expressive use of content-type header errors. Lily's music provides the only beauty in the life of teenage Yuichi (Ichihara). All About Lily Chou-Chou follows two childhood friends, Shusuke Hoshino and Yuichi Hasumi, from the end of their junior high school run until the beginning. As the film began as an Internet novel, it's fitting that the first lines aren't uttered, but blossom onscreen as chat room text. A 2001 film directed by Shunji Iwai, based on an online novel he wrote, that revolves around the friendship between Yuichi Hasumi and Shunsuke Hoshino.Two rather timid boys in middle school who are regularly confronted with bullying. An imaginary pop goddess who pays homage to Debussy, Lily Chou-Chou was apparently conceived after writer/director Iwai saw HK starlet Faye Wong in concert. Yuichi (Hayato Ichihara) is in the 8th grade and he worships Lily Chou-Chou, a Bjork-like chanteuse whose epic music is lush and transcendent.
